Edge Vol. 3: The Common Good

by Edge Kingsland

/
1.
Amen 04:37
I want to hear Your voice But the head makes war with the heart I want to live in holy forfeit Bound by the words You said I want to know what You meant When You said love would beat the sword I want to see the kingdom In the eyes of my fellow man Amen, amen Let it be as You said I want to learn to pray With my hands before my words I want to see earth from heaven And see heaven in the dirt of earth I want to live for more No longer I, but Thine No longer mine, but Yours Amen, amen Let it be as You said
2.
If the horizon becomes a line with no end I will follow Your voice with each little step I will set my compass by a higher course Show a prodigal heart the direction ahead   Word, most divine Make Your way inside Let there be light My heart is an open sky And if it be Your will, set me to my knees Send me close to the earth, bring me closer to Thee I am learning the art of surrendering I am hearing Your voice in the absence of me
3.
Arms of Love 05:51
If hope is lost To wreck and debris If comfort fails And ground falls to the sea An afterlight Still burns in me If I should falter Feet don’t fail me Set wings above And ever-watchful eyes on me These arms of love These guards of mercy I’ll never boast Of my own empires When I am held in hands that hold the stars* For I have found Kingdoms in Your embrace The arms of love This signal song The arms of love Will cover me In the arms everlasting God above and God beside me
4.
There’s a place for the thirsty There’s a house for the wayward soul Grace, uncontained like an over-run well There’s a saviour with answers for me There’s a quiet exchange  There’s a peace that will not be explained  Frayed at the edges but seeking Your face I am emptied upon bended knee Come to the water That runs to the sea You will wait For me There’s a place where I find You Where the borders of faith and doubt meet Pilgrim, petitioner, vagrant and thief All in Your sight made complete There’s a road to Emmaus Where Heavenly company’s kept Traced in the dust of an ever-worn path Step by accompanied step
5.
Abide 04:58
Over aching seas Reach for open skies I’m here alone but You are with me Feet heavy from the climb I breathe Your endless life And in Your stillness I abide My shelter is a cave I climb towards Your whisper Beyond the wind or thunder storming When darkness finds me hiding I lie in comfort’s arms And in Your kindness I abide And I could stay here a little while Or I could run for cover I found an anchor in the depths of Your heart You remain and I abide Your goodness like a flame A light of constant guidance And all my shadow fears are failing I bend my will to Thee And all ghosts run for cover And in Your safe sight I abide Under starry hosts I dare not count them all As is above, below shall be While strangers on the road Find company from heaven In this assurance I abide
6.
The Round 07:10
Morning wakes the light Sweeping through the tree shutters And the sky sings her hymn Bringing out the full colour You appear   And You still talk In this You talk If I go up to the mountain I’ll still find You
7.
At the Cross 05:40
When the world is quiet I will lean upon the cross In the company of thieves I am too, a prince to Thee I will leave this At the cross I will fall down to my knees I will kiss beloved feet All my pains are shattered fast In the company of Thee
8.
I will remember this I’m safe, I’m held, I’m open Every edge of the world insists Unwavering devotion I will remember You I’m home, I’m held, I’m broken Every time Your mercy arrives I feel Your strength divine The pillar of light The end of the night We will not forget it No, we will not forget The rescue, the rise This hope in our eyes We will not forget it No, we will not forget
9.
Oh God 05:29
Oh God, I bring to You the doubt in my head Oh God, I bring to You the stuff I don't get Oh God, I bring to You the things that I said Oh God, I bring to You my disconnect And I stand with my hands As open as the land And you see every crease And every grain of sand Oh God, I bring to You all of my pride Oh God, I bring to You the hunger I hide Oh God, I bring to You the tears that I shed Oh God, I bring to You whatever is left The rain knows my name And all of those along the barren plain The thorn knows the rose And protects it as it grows Oh God, I bring to You the habits I hate Oh God, I bring to You my plan of escape Oh God, I bring to You my place on the road Oh God, I bring to You the little I know And I stand with my hands As open as the land You see every crease And every grain of sand
10.
Peace 05:26
When you lay down your head Peace be with you He said When you fear what’s ahead Peace be with you He said When you’re filled with regret Peace be with you He said I’ll be holding your hand Peace be with you He said When they throw the first stone Peace be with you He said When you’re pining for home Peace be with you He said When the magic is gone Peace be with you He said I’ll be there all along Peace be with you He said Lay down your cares At Jerusalem’s walls The ragged, the torn Will be troubled no more Carve out a path To the rugged old cross All is not lost All is not lost  When the melody fades Peace be with you He said When all else has failed Peace be with you He said When you’re lost in the war Peace be with you He said And your scars scream for more Peace be with you He said When the wolf’s at the door Peace be with you He said There’s a light up ahead Peace be with you He said When your heart’s on your sleeve When you’re all out of fight You’ll be safe in My sight Peace be with you He said

about

Every task is the combustion of the flame of God. He greets us in the kitchen. He gazes intently upon us at the well-curb. In the bustle and hustle of the factory or when we are hanging on the strap in the crowded car we breathe God.

- Toyohito Kagawa

The idea of liturgy is one that can’t be separated from the works of the public; it’s the description of a faith that is all-encompassing. This God we sing to; He’s not distant from us. He’s not confined within the walls of a Sabbath service. He’s a blue-collar deity; evident in the steel and the mortar and the recurring cycle of creation outside your door. He’s in death and life and everything in between.

Our sacred songs then, become anthems of the ordinary. Tributes to the God of our working week; the one who greets us in the bustle and hustle.

Songs of the common good.
